How the Newton Fund works

The Fund is being delivered by 15 UK delivery partners in collaboration with funders in 18 partnering countries. They develop and run calls, allocate and manage the money they receive as part of the Newton Fund. All opportunities for organisations, institutions and individuals interested in applying are listed on our funding page.

 

The Newton Fund is known as the Newton-Ungku Omar Fund in Malaysia.

 

Priorities for Malaysia

The Newton-Ungku Omar Fund has an overarching theme of climate change and sustainable urbanisation, with the following priority areas:

  • Health and life sciences.
  • Environmental resilience and energy security.
  • Future cities.
  • Agri-technology.
  • Digital innovation and creativity.

About the Malaysian Funder and Delivery Partners

  • The match-funder and coordinating body in Malaysia is the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MiGHT), an agency under the Prime Minister's Office. MiGHT is also a delivery partner for a number of programmes under the Newton-Ungku Omar Fund.
  • Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE)
  • Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), an agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI)
  • Malaysian Innovation Agency (AIM), an agency under the Prime Minister's Office
  • PlaTCOM Ventures Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary under Malaysian Innovation Agency (AIM)
  • Ministry of Education (MoE)
  • Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia),  an agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI)
  • National Disaster Management Agency Malaysia, an agency under the Prime Minister's Office

About the Newton-Ungku Omar Fund representatives in Malaysia

The Newton-Ungku Omar Fund in-country team is based at the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur and is responsible for:

  • Representing UK delivery partners and UK government’s interests in funder-to-funder/government-to-government discussions
  • Facilitating the establishment and delivery of programmes under Newton-Ungku Omar Fund, in collaboration with Malaysian partners
  • Promoting the programme of activities and funding opportunities, together with MiGHT
  • Monitoring the programme results and impacts
