Royal visit launches Newton Fund Alumni Network in China

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Princess Anne visited Changsha in the Hunan Province of south central China on 7 July, where she helped launch the Newton Fund Alumni Network.

Twenty one alumni from across South China gathered for a workshop to share their work and experience as part of Newton’s UK-China Research and Innovation Partnership. At a reception to celebrate the newly launched Spirit of Youth campaign, a number of Newton Fund alumni met with Her Royal Highness.

The Newton Fund Alumni Network will bring together scientists working to combat global challenges under the UK Research and Innovation Partnership Fund, also known as the Newton Fund.

Richard Baker, Newton Fund Strategic Manager in China said in a recent blog: “The China Newton Fund Alumni are a diverse bunch. Professor Tida Ge is working on carbon sequestration and nutrient efficiency in crops such as rice. Professor Lei Shi is studying a medical condition affecting newborn babies. Professor Zhixun Xie has just been awarded a research and development grant to support his work on infections disease in farmed animals.”

Changsha was the last stop for Her Royal Highness during her China tour, following her visits to Beijing and Wuhan.
